Intermediate Surfers: are defined as surfers who are performing recognisable manoeuvres on waves that they catch independently. These surfers could be loosely grouped as recreational, club, or developing competition surfers who are motivated to improve their current surfing performances.
In this curriculum, surf coaches will learn a structured assessment approach to evaluate performances effectively, and coaching techniques to teach the intermediate wave-riding skills necessary for daily success. Specific skills explained in detail include:
- Assessment, evaluation, and intervention techniques coaches can use to improve the training outcomes of their surfers.
- Beach Observation, positioning in the ocean, and selecting waves theory and training drills.
- Biomechanical principles as they apply to surfing and specifically – the intermediate skills of surfing.,
- The correct technique of the intermediate skills of surfing – bottom turns, cutbacks, finishes, etc.,
- Competition theory, as it applies to intermediate level surfers.
Surf coaches need to understand that mastering the “wave riding” skills of intermediate surfers not only creates high levels of daily success, it also creates the foundation off which advanced level performances can be built.
This E-book has been developed from Martin’s experiences, coaching thousands of surfers over a 40 year period. In it he shares the training theory, drills, and soft skills surf coaches need to guide “Intermediate surfers” to better daily performances.
